Lions claim Egnew

The Miami Dolphins recently cut ties with former 2012 third-round pick tight end Michael Egnew. After his position coach openly admitted that Egnew was a “receiving threat” tight end whegnewo couldn’t run his routes well, it came as no surprise that the Dolphins decided to part ways.  The Detroit Lions however, obviously saw something they liked-claiming Egnew off waivers on Tuesday.  The Lions will inherit Egnew’s remaining rookie deal with it’s two base salaries of $585,000 (2014) and $687,500 (2015).  Egnew will not have it easy in Detroit as he competes to make the roster with two former first round picks already on the team in tight end, Brandon Pettigrew and rookie tight end, Eric Ebron.  Over the past two regular seasons, Egnew has been active for 18 games, totalling 7 catches for 69 yards and no touchdowns.

suhIn other news, the latest buzz surrounding the Lions is all about defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.  Suh is going into a contract year and is expected to seek a massive payout once his current contract expires.  With $22.4 million against the cap and $12.6 million in guaranteed money headed his way, there is a very small chance the Lions will be able to retain him in Detroit.  According to a source close to the situation, the possibility of the Lions being able to hang on to the ferocious defensive tackle is ‘almost impossible’.  We’ll stay close to the situation and keep you updated on the latest as we hear it.

The first wave of the league-mandated roster cuts landed on Tuesday.  The Lions cut offensive lineman Bryce Quigley and tight end Jacob Maxwell and brought in fullback Emil Igwenagu and the above mentioned Michael Egnew.  Head coach Jim Caldwell said Igwenagu might play Thursday night against Buffalo.  “Hopefully you will see him this week,” Caldwell said. “He’s one of those guys that he’s going to have to be a quick learner in order for us to be able to utilize him, but we plan on doing just that. We’re going to put him under an intensive learning curve here shortly.”
